Lyrics matter as much to me as the music. Yeah, if a band’s lame and has good lyrics, I’d rather read the lyrics and not listen to the band, but the bands I love and the bands I like are separated by how good the lyrics are.
I’m not going to say there’s a right and a wrong way to listen to music, and hardcore especially because it’s not something I’m super heavily involved in other than listening to it, but I will say the reason I love bands like Bane, Paint It Black, American Nightmare, Last Lights, etc. is because those guys can write the shit out of a song, and while I love how heavy Hatebreed’s first couple of records are, it just doesn’t resonate with me the same way as the bands I’ve been consistently listening to since I was 16 or 17.
